So - this may be totally boring to most anyone that reads this but I just have to share my first "experience" with a Board Meeting.
First, let me say, it was boring. I am the only female in the room with 12 men. Some are nice, some are so serious you think their face may crack if they crack a smile, and some had been in the men's card room since 8am drinking beer. I was lucky enough to have two of those beer drinkers fighting for a seat next to me. Lucky me.
So being my first board meeting to present the Financial Statements to the board.. I had no idea what to expect. The first meeting was at 4:30, a meeting with the newly established "finance committee". We were to go over the budget proposal for 2011. Let me paint this picture.. me, our GM (who is a nice guy but thinks everyone on the board hates him), a retired bank president that had been through a 4 hour stress today and really I thought he would crawl up on the table and fall asleep, the most serious of the bankers - face crack guy, and our ever so lovely Vice president of the club - the old super nice guy that smiles while digging a knife deeper.... ya get the picture?
So the first line on the budget (which is 4 pages long) is regarding estimated revenue from the golf shop... first item .. Cart plans. We proceeded to talk/discuss/argue/talk more about cart plans. FORTY FIVE minutes we discussed CART PLANS. Then we had to "adjourn" the finance committee meeting b/c the board meeting was due to start. What was resolved? "We should bring this up to the rest of the board in the board meeting" - Oh boy, yes, lets get the rest of them in on this one. I thought to myself "I should have packed Nathan some jammies".
So the rest of the guys come in with their drinks, beers, wine (and I wanted to pout "where is mine?").. we get started... and they let me go first.
I present the Income Statement and Balance sheet. I go over each section. answer questions and love the one I got... from the old stone face guy... "so where do we get these numbers, I mean what is the variance and how do we know what we're actually spending and receiving." . Um, well, ya see, it all goes into the computer software.. daily.. hourly as a matter of fact and then I create the reports from the software and WHA LA - reports! "yes but, are they right?" - Well, stone face dude, it is what it is... it's a report, based on the daily numbers, so yes. President inserts "they are as close as they are going to get Bob, can we move on?" - and then they started asking me for all this other stuff.. that I didn't have... and I started to sweat. So I took a sip of my tea.. and smiled and said .... (Dad, you would have been proud of me)...
"Well gentlemen.. since this is my first board meeting, and I really don't know you all want need or expect, why don't you tell me exactly what you'd like for me to have here to present to you and I will take care of it. I kind of came in to this meeting blind so tell me what you want to see and I'll have it for you.".
Nobody could tell me anything. They all just sat there and then started with "oh no this is great, and we know the variances are computed" and all of a sudden they grew brains.
I also told them that our software company is coming in to town in January and I'd love to have them sign up to come to the accounting training so that they can ask for specific reports or see how things work and maybe that would help them all understand how our system works. No takers..
I left after my part was over so that my kids could get home and have some dinner, but I wonder if they are all still sitting up there talking about the damn cart plans.
So overall my first board meeting went okay. Not great, Not bad... just went and I'm cool with that.

Dear Children....
Dear Jackson,
I love how you have grown and am so excited about your Birthday weekend! Just wanted to give you a little lesson in growing up. When ya clean the bathroom, it requires more than just getting your clothes out of the floor and putting your various hair products, body sprays, and cologne in the drawer. Usually it's a good idea to clean the toilet and wipe the toothpaste off of the sink and off of the mirror. (PS... as for the toothpaste on the mirror, usually we brush our teeth not the reflection of our teeth). Love you - Mom.
Dear Nathan,
I love how you want to be such a great helper and assist your older brother in cleaning his bathroom. However, it's usually not a good idea to use toilet paper in the sink to clean out the toothpaste, and then shove it down the drain to "clean it up". I appreciate the effort and am glad you have now been introduced to the product "DRANO". It will definitely become more useful as you continue to "help" us out.
Love you - Mom.

So much to share, so little time
So the last time I blogged it was Jackson's 11th Birthday. Here I sit, just 2 weeks from his 12th finding it hard to believe it's been almost a year since I did this last. I pondered what to write about really. Everything in our life from 1 year ago has changed. I was unemployed looking for a job, now I'm working full time at the Brunswick Country Club as their accountant. I love it mostly. No, really, I do.... It has been a year of adjusting quite honestly but I think we're all doing well. So a quick update and then a funny replay of the last few weeks.
Jackson is about to be 12. He started Middle School this year and while it was scary for me, he's adjusted well and is maintaining his AB grades and making new friends. Nathan just turned 4.. I know, can you even believe that? He is still crazy Nate and keeps me shaking my head in wonder, makes me laugh and keeps me very busy. He's going to a great sitters house while I work (he couldn't do preschool but more on that in a bit)... and he LOVES "MeMa Joanne". Bryan is still working lots and liking his job. He's still golfing and I think secretly LOVES the fact that I, Mrs. Hate Golf, am working at a Golf club.
So on to my "funny". Of course it involves Nathan. Back this summer we started with the "ok it's now time for you be potty trained". He was 3.5 years old and Jackson was trained by then so it was just time. Nate, however, disagreed. I wanted to start him in preschool this fall, however, nobody would enroll him in diapers. The battle went on.. "Nate it's time for you start working on potty training, you are almost 4" "No, I'm still your baby and I love diapers". And so it went like this for MONTHS. EVERYONE WE KNOW tried to convince him that it was time and he was ready. So a little over a week ago I decided I was done. I declared to Nathan I was NOT going to buy another diaper ever. He had a choice.. pull ups or underwear and use the potty. We went to the zoo that Saturday for his birthday and he proudly walked around in his diaper. Sunday morning Nate wanted his last diaper changed. I told him we were out of diapers and he could put on a pull up or underwear. This is where it got ugly.
Hours upon hours of crying, screaming, more crying, more screaming, and flat out refusal to even walk PAST the bathroom was how we spent our Sunday. My tears were from pure frustration. His were pure determination.
On Monday I took him to his sitters and told her about our previous day. She had no idea WHAT to do with Nate. Fast forward the day to when I go pick him up. MeMa Joanne called him over to me and said "Nate, tell mom what you did today?" and let me ASSURE you this question makes me cringe because with Nate - you just NEVER know. He said "Oh I went pee on the potty". It was if the heavens opened up and the angels sang! I almost pee'd myself right there I was so excited. Not just once, but ALL DAY he used the potty. He has now gone 8 days without an accident and we haven't even had to tell him to go - he just gets up and goes. I have to say, he has trained himself.
Now, I don't know if he realized we were just THAT serious, or if he realized that in 2 days he was going to be four and his deadline was fast approaching, or if he (which would be in Nate fashion) was laughing on the inside tormenting us to see just how long we would hold out.... but whatever his reason or readiness I am SUPER proud of him and SUPER glad that my days with diapers are over. Well, at least until we visit those of the adult nature.
So Nathan is now officially a "big boy" and he corrects me when I call him Baby. I know he will be always be my baby because I'm 41 and I'm still my mom's baby. But I can only admit this here, in the silence of my blog, where nobody can else can hear, I am a LITTLE sad that my BABY is growing up as fast as my first babe.

So proud of my now 11 yr old.....
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my first baby Jackson! I can't believe he is 11 years old. I still remember his early arrival, the rush to the hospital, the rush to get my folks up from NC, meeting him, holding him, and loving him instantly.
11 years provides a LOT of pictures, so I've been going through some today and picked out a few to share of my darling dear boy! I hope you enjoy seeing some of his fun, fine, and wonderful accomplishments!
I love you Jackson, I love the person you are, I love the son you are, and I love the brother you are. I love that you know LOVE in our family and will continue to grow into a fine young man!
Early years on "the rock" in Myrtle Beach, SC.

We were so proud of Jackson going door to door on his bike in the Hot GA summer to raise money for Hurricane Katrina Victims

Our new little puppy Paco - Jackson's "baby"

Enjoying a Jacksonville Jaquars football game with Dad.

Bubbles anyone?

Loving on his MeeMaw and PawPaw

Showing off his dance moves.

Proudly accepting the Citizenship Award from his Principal

Being a loving brother

Breaking the board with a swift KICK

Anakin Skywalker at his best!

DADDY ATTACK!

Archeological Dig

Off to Fifth Grade

Tackling the Rock Wall

A fine young man looking quite grown up these days

As you can see, this is just a snapshot of Jackson. He is one great kid, a great friend, has a loving heart, a smart head, and a spice for life.
Any wonder why we're super proud of young man?

Free
Yes, that's right. My littlest scooby is THREE YEARS OLD TODAY! What the heck? Didn't I just have him?
Nathan is a one of a kind. He knows that he is turning three and will tell you "now I is two but Tuesday I be free". I love it. His mind is a working machine. He's definitely gone from little toddler to imaginative nonstop talking preschooler. He marches to his own drum, and I for one, love the leader of his band.
Yes, he still drives me bonkers. Most days I just end the day shaking my head thinking "how did I survive another one? how are the two dogs still living? How is my house still standing?" but every day we dance thru the world of a now 3 year old.
If any of you follow me on Facebook (or my husband man for that matter) you already know that Nate has started getting up for middle of night parties. He's gotten up at 3am and asked me to start his favorite CD and open the cookies. He's gotten up at 3am, turned on Fox News and sat down with a pizza box on the sofa chowing on cold pizza. Drives me crazy but it's just Nate.
Some days I think about how I miss that tiny little butterball that I held while he napped. The little guy that would just stare at me or Bryan or Jackson and smile. The little kid that would crawl like a little monkey, one knee down and one foot down. The little kid that would pull up on my desk and turn off my computer. The little kid that dumps food just so that I will get out his still favorite vacuum cleaner to clean it up.
Now he's the same little kid, but he likes to play games, he talks about things we did this past summer with vivid memory. He asks for what he wants (ok most times) in full sentences. He turns my furniture into a trampoline and laughs from his belly when he falls down. He requests videos on "youbube". He follows his big brother around like he's the only person in the world that matters. He makes his own waffles and microwave popcorn. I love how he gets his popcorn out of the microwave on his own - yes it's hot, but he figured out how to use my salad tongs to get it out.. all on his own. He's smart.
Kids grow up. I get that. I have another child about to turn 11.. and man I can't even think about that one yet. Nate just seems to have really turned a corner from "baby" to "kid" more so recently.
So Happy 3rd Birthday to my beautiful son, Nathan. I love you baby boy, and yes you ARE my baby, always WILL be my baby. I love you and your crazy antics, I love that you are your own little person and have created this awesome gift to our family. You bring joy, laughter, and sometimes a lot of headshaking to us all. We love your own little drum you have.
Keep marching Nathan, you're bound for big things.
Love,
Mommy

The Beat Goes On...
So summer is wrapping up. Hard to believe. I remember back in the day (God, did I just say that?) we'd be out all of August - and not go back to school until after Labor Day. Jackson goes back next week, August 6. So... what has the last month been like?
Beach trip was awesome. There is nothing better than being with family. Of course we had our moments with Nate but it's Nathan people! He's a free spirit! We came home from the beach and had about 5 days to wash, dry, fold, and reload and we headed up to Northern Virginia for a week with Bryan's family.
It was also a great week of family and wildly busy with something to do or somewhere to go or someone to see daily. The drive was what did us all in. 10.5 hours up there where Nate slept a grand total of 20 minutes in the car, Jackson did much better. lol We did fork out the cash for the double TV screens in the car, however fastly realized we'd made a big mistake, should have forked over even MORE cash to get them each their own. We all got tired of watching the ONE movie that Nate would watch quietly - Imagination Movers DVD which is about 20 minutes long. That is a lot of Imagination movers in a 10.5 hours drive. Jackson was a trooper and got to watch one maybe two movies. The trip back was horrid with Northern Virginia traffic, so we ended up getting a hotel room and breaking the trip up.
Funny's on the ride home. Grandma had gotten the boys some goldfish crackers for the drive home. Nathan wanted some and I gave him a bag of them. Out of nowhere it was like we were under attack. Random goldfish flying up front pelting Bryan in the head. I was going crazy trying to reach back to get them from him but he'd strategically placed them in hiding places around his car seat. I got what I thought was most. A few minutes later more bombing... he'd stashed them in shorts legs and diaper. We laughed so hard, and soon realized the hotel was a must.
Hotel was nice, the boys loved the pool and hot tub. We thought for sure after a big dinner, swimming, and 8 hours in the car Nate would crash but the hotel was all new to him. He was up talking and pretending to sleep only to pop up and say "what is dat over der mommy" until 11:30. He thought it was awesome how mommy could disappear out of the big door and come back with pretzels and drinks. He woke up bright and early and came over to me and said "mommy go get me a snack". Jackson was, of course, a trooper and happy to have Bryan's laptop and headphones to watch a movie and relax.
So that takes us to today. I've been applying for a few jobs and still keeping the faith that I'll be glad I'm taking my time looking for the RIGHT place to fit in. Bryan leaves a week from today (Tuesday) for another trip to the Ukraine for 10-12 days and Jackson starts school on Thursday. 5th grade. Big dog on campus this year.
The rest of this week will be full of cleaning out, cleaning up and getting school supplies (and for those that know me well, know this is VERY exciting for me) and preparing for the start of what I hope will be a great year.
So summer has flown by, and while I stress when I pay bills, and worry about my future and job security, its been a real blessing to be able to go and do and be home with the boys without the stress of work. Things happen for a reason and I firmly believe that.
So on with the new school year, on with the job that's out there for me, and on with Nate adjusting to daycare and making friends his own age, on with knowing that each day is a gift, and we shouldn't waste it wishing for anything else.

Dear Jackson
Let me start off by saying I love you. You are my son, my first born, and I love you.
But I need to clear up a few matters.
First - I love your ambition to play basketball, sports are fabulous, but you should stick to using a basketball and a basket outside, your socks and your laundry basket don't seem to be your thing. I'd appreciate it if your dirty nasty pre-teen smelling socks would be IN your laundry basket instead of all over your room, behind your bed breeding something, or stuck in your window blinds.
Second - I know your fortunate to have a TV in your room, but that doesn't mean you can turn it on and leave it on so that you can catch a glimpse of something good when you happen to walk by. It really will turn BACK on after you turn it off. We do pay a power bill here.
Third - the refrigerator, cups, and ice are in the same place they have been for 6 years now, I know you remember that. I am more than happy to help you out on occasion but honestly, I think at almost 11 years old you would notice if we moved these items (oh yeah, the pantry too). I have the utmost of confidence that you can get off the sofa and get a drink all on your own. It makes me proud when you pour your own drink.
Fourth - I know you love certain shirts, but really they must be changed once in a while.
Fifth - while I appreciate you teaching your little brother lots of fun stuff, could you possibly avoid encouraging him playing DODGE BALL in the house with whatever happens to be closest to him? I think it's great you are teaching him sports, but outside is the best place for things to be flung about. And just to let ya know, it really is NOT funny when he flings a stone coaster at the dog.
and Last but certainly not least, no matter how funny it is, no matter how hard you TRY not to laugh, kindly walk out of the room to laugh when your "bubba" drops the D-word.
I do so love you, you are a great kid with a big heart, but thought I needed to throw these out there for ya, just little reminders in life.
